RaceRunner Times sunday WELCOME! Sunday the 5th of July 2009. The 13th international RaceRunner Camp and Cup has begun and this year’s first edition of RaceRunner Times has now been published. In the newsdesk we once again look forward to cover EVERYTHING that’s taking place at the camp through sensational news and exhaustive articles. This year CPISRA, Cerebral Palsy International Sports & Recreation Association, has chosen to hold the world championship in RaceRunning in connection with the camp. In that way a circle has been completed since Denmark, as many might know, was the country where RaceRunning started. New circles is however already getting drawn given that two new countries, Brazil and The Faroe Islands, are participating in this year’s camp. The first days of the camp have been busy. The camp-participants have arrived from Denmark, Sweden, The Faroe Islands, Spain, Portugal and Brazil, the athletes have been classified and the first trainings have marked the beginning of the camp. Meanwhile there have also been accidents. For example when one of Mansoor Siddiqis talented assistants, destroyed a car by filling it with petrol instead of diesel. The athletes from Brazil first heard about RaceRunning two month ago. Despite that they have chosen to travel all the way to Denmark to participate in the camp, the cup and the world championship. Our reporter Peter Hellmers has meet Ana Cecilia Del Duca Frazão to a talk about the future prospects for RaceRunning in Brazil. Last year the athlete Jacob Birkbak broke five world records. RaceRunner Times has asked him and the athletes Michael Thyregod Jensen and Naheen Ali about their expectations for this years competitions. The three interviews are published in today’s paper. We at the RaceRunner Times look forward to delivering daily news to everybody at the camp. Brazil
During the camp we will present a daily portrait of RaceRunning in the countries represented on the camp First up is Brazil Based on interview with Ana Cecilia Del Duca Frazão: Although the sport has only existed for 2 month in Brazil, the Brazilian athletes and trainers have shown great commitment and initiative, taking the first given opportunity to compete on highest level in the World Championship. The history of Brazilian RaceRunning started 6 years ago when the Portuguese RaceRunning coach Christiana was in Brazil for the Boccia World Championship. During her visit Christina told Ana’s mother Tania Frazão about the possibilities in RaceRunning. Along with her husband Frederico Frazão and Ana, Tania runs a rehabilitation centre. Inspired by her mothers interest in the sport Ana came across RaceRunning videos on the Internet and decided to start up the sport in Brazil. First step in the start up process was to provide the bikes: “Mansoor send the drawings and sizes of the RaceRunning bike, and we had a guy who makes wheelchairs make the first Brazilian RaceRunning Bike. Next step was to introduce the bikes to athletes. Ana remembers the first try-out: the athletes were very happy. One of the athletes wanted to take the bike with him back home – but we had to train another athlete afterwards” Right now there are 3 active Brazilian RaceRunning Athletes. They are all boccia players as well and therefore used to the training and travelling. When asked about the future of RaceRunning in Brazil Ana answers: Many people are asking about the sport. Now I can tell them where to go to get a bike and when to come for training. Since we can offer that opportunity now, I belive people will come” The first RaceRunner Did you know that the first RaceRunner, or "The Walking Machine" as it was called, was made in 1989 as the result of a collaboration between national coach Mansoor Siddiqi and wheelchair racer Connie Hansen. The first prototype consisted of parts from an old vacuum cleaner, three wheels, and an office chair. Which were put together by Connie's father who was forge.
